{"id":1156,"date":"2024-06-10T09:16:08","date_gmt":"2024-06-10T09:16:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.westdorsetfriendsoftheearth.org.uk\/?page_id=1156"},"modified":"2024-06-10T09:33:45","modified_gmt":"2024-06-10T09:33:45","slug":"the-environmental-rights-bill","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.westdorsetfriendsoftheearth.org.uk\/index.php\/the-environmental-rights-bill\/","title":{"rendered":"the Environmental Rights Bill"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"816\" height=\"1024\" src=\"http:\/\/www.westdorsetfriendsoftheearth.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Scott-816x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1157\" style=\"width:201px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.westdorsetfriendsoftheearth.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Scott-816x1024.jpg 816w, https:\/\/www.westdorsetfriendsoftheearth.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Scott-239x300.jpg 239w, https:\/\/www.westdorsetfriendsoftheearth.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Scott-768x964.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.westdorsetfriendsoftheearth.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Scott.jpg 1129w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 816px) 85vw, 816px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Members of West Dorset Friends of the Earth have been s\u00a7itting on Bridges asking for cleaner rivers and an affirmation of our environmental rights. &nbsp;The UN has already recognised these rights in&nbsp;a unanimous vote that affirmed a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment as a human right. &nbsp;But the UK government has been slow to guarantee this.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An Environmental Rights Act would embed the legal right to a healthy environment into law and ensure pollution was acted on.&nbsp; It would hold public bodies to account and give people legal means to challenge decisions that harm their health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It would give an individual the&nbsp;<em>right to know<\/em>, the&nbsp;<em>right to engage&nbsp;<\/em>and the&nbsp;<em>right to challenge<\/em>, anyone undertaking functions of a public nature (including private companies).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, if you give a sh*t about protecting and restoring our environment, join in with the outcry about the state of our waterways and shoreline. &nbsp;Everyone should have the right to a healthy environment.&nbsp; And our rivers and seas deserve to be treated with respect rather than used as dumping grounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>A full description of the Environmental Rights bill can be found here:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcl.org.uk\/environmentalrightsbill.asp\">https:\/\/www.wcl.org.uk\/environmentalrightsbill.asp<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The campaign is gathering attention and we will update this page.  For now, the public could ask the question of their candidates in the general election: would they support this bill?
